An electric bike that looks and feels like a normal old-school mountain bike. Perfect for giving you a boost when travelling across town.

Easy Assembly Out of the Box

This ebike came almost complete and assembly takes less than an hour. The only tricky part is aligning the front brake, which you might need a bike mechanic for if you don’t know much about tools.

    Light Weight Ebike

With a 250 watt motor, you hardly notice the difference between the weight of this bike and a normal mountain bike. Even with the 10 amp hour battery, the Bluelander isn’t heavy.

Riding the ebike feels like riding my normal 26 inch rim mountain bike. It’s really a joy, but the frame is too small for 194cm me (a common problem for us giants) but, a perfect option for a normal-sized person.

Despite being light-weight, it feels well-built, and it can take the rugged roads of La Paz with ease. If you didn’t see the battery and hub motor, you really wouldn’t know you were riding an electric bicycle, which is pretty cool!

    Small Motor Means More Exercise

With my 1000 watt ebike, the pedal assist felt jerky and out of sink as all that power kicked in. Not so much with the 250 watt motor on the Bluelander, it performs better if you help it to start up and then maintains the top speed for your power level pretty easy on flat terrain.

Plus, it’s super easy pedalling the Bluelander. In fact, I hardly want to use the motor and pedal it with my legs most of the time without feeling dragged down by the weight.

This is a great choice if you want to maintain your fitness level, but might need a boost up hills or when your late for a meeting (it still goes over 35 km with the motor).

    Small But Adequate Battery

I imagined the 10.4 amp hour battery might worry me with a low range, but I found the opposite. I have ebiked across La Paz Centro three times and the battery is still over 50%, which is pretty awesome. I have not charged it yet, but I imagine it will charge fast being so small.

This is probably due to it’s light wieght, which means I pedal more on the Bluelander than with my beefy 1000 watt motor and 23 amp hour battery. With the Bluelander, there is no worry about running out of battery, I can pedal home with my legs without a problem.

The only complaint I have with the battery system is that I have not found a way to see the battery voltage. The built in battery meter is ok, but knowing the voltage gives me a better idea of how much juice I have left.

Great Way To Turn Off Pedal Assist

I found you can still use the throttle when the pedal assist is in 0. This is a great way to get the motor’s power but not worry about the bike taking off when you are making slow moves.

For my main ebike, I had to basically hack into the computer to turn it off so that I could have throttle only. The Bluelander way is much simpler.

A Great Ebike For Urban La Paz

This is an awesome option if you want to ride around in the city. The mountain bike tires give you comfort and confidence to conquer the baches and sandy stretches.

The motor is just enough to give you a boost. I like the idea of pedalling down hill all the way to Coromuel, then getting a ride with the motor to return home up the slow gradual grade to where most people live.

At around 12,000 pesos, this is a solid ebike at an incredible price. Buy yours now before they sell out!

  • Restsuko Bicicleta Electrica Calificación

This small foldable electric bike attracted me with a lot of power and a big battery. Are the components around these electrical stats worth the money?

The Restsuko boasts a 500 watt motor and 20 amp hour battery, all for only 5,500 mxn. I was pleasantly surprised with the ebikes logo, build quality, and performance, it’s definitely worth it’s great price, and I am tempted to keep using it.

If you need a simple, affordable, fast ebike for commuting to work or running errands around La Paz, the Restsuko could be the perfect choice for you. Keep reading for more insights and see how my test rides went.

    Me on a Restsuko ebike

    Restsuko Folding Ebike Stats

    • 500 watt 48 Volt Motor
    • 20 Amp Hour Battery
    • Cost = $5,500 mxn
    • Weight = 35kg
    • Ordered 15 August, Arrived 27 August = 12 day delivery

    Unboxing First Impressions

This ebike comes in a tiny package, and I see the appeal of having a foldable ebike now. It’s still heavy, but manageable for such a powerful machine I could see taking on a bus or a train.

I loved the logo for some reason, the colors are beautiful and they did a nice job with it. It comes with a bunch of stuff too, like a lock, a basket, rearview mirrors, but no helmet or pump.

    Assembly For Restsuko Ebike

The ebike came with a terrible instruction booklet with no visual guide, only a poorly translated written guide. There is a video guide on the Restsuko amazon page.

The front wheel came without the hub driver assembled, and the bolt, nuts and washer were loose in the box. In the video, it was put together so I had to figure out which order to put all the pieces in. Here is a photo of what I figured out:

Here is the end that goes on the brake side:

The assembly took less than one hour, and there was only a little frustration involved.

    First Ride

The controls are minimal, with a small LED screen with no buttons, then buttons for lights and horn, finally a three position toggle for the speeds controlled by a handlebar grip throttle. It has pedal assist or throttle, and I hope I can figure out how to turn off pedal assist because I don’t like it.

The seat is comfy but it does feel a little rickety on my dirt callejon. The Restsuko is powerful and took me up a hill without a problem.

Also, I put some neighbor kids on the back seat and it was fairly easy to ride with them. The bike is fun and I think when I get used to it I will feel safer on it.

    Testing the Restsuko Ebike

The Restsuko Ebike Is A Good Buy

This is a great little ebike and totally a steal at 5,500mxn. I bought it to rob the battery off it, becuase it is basically the same price to buy a stand alone ebike battery of 20 amp hours.

I might just keep the ebike too, either build another battery for it or I’m not sure now, but it is pretty cool.

  • 48 Volt 42000 mAh Ebike Battery Review

It’s really tough to get an ebike battery in La Paz. It’s expensive, plus it takes a month or more to arrive.

I have seen many cheaper ebike batteries without the hailong case for about 1500 pesos, and I thought for sure it was a scam. But, in desperation I decided to give one a shot.

I went with the GNIUBBDB Batería de Iones de Litio para Bicicleta eléctrica, 48 V, 42 Ah, 13S3P, con Cargador y protección BMS incorporada, Ideal para Motor de Bicicleta eléctrica de 200-1500 W XT60 Plug. It arrived, and no, it is not 42000 mAh, but it is 48 volts.

    Details Of The Order

I ordered on July 26, and it said it would arrive between August 6th and 20th. It arrived on the 20th, which is a triumph of sorts because it can be difficult for things to arrive from China to La Paz (I ordered a different Hailong battery earlier this year that got lost in customs).

The cost was 1,717 pesos with free delivery. This would be a great deal for a 42ah battery. But, it is not 42 ah 😦

How Do I Know It’s Not 42000 mAh?

It’s easy to count the battery cells in the package. There are 3 rows of 13 cells, equaling 39 total cells.

They are arranged in 13 series connected cells to equal 48 volts, and then 3 parrallel connections between those groups. Each series connected group probably has about 3000mAh, so it comes out to about 9000mAh total.

There is no chance it is 42000 mAh.

    Is It Worth It?

1,717 pesos for a 48 volt 9ah battery may not be so bad. I still need to figure out how to make a good case but these could be the best way to get an affordable ebike battery in La Paz.

    Plan For Using Battery

9ah is pretty small, so I want to connect multiple of these in parallel to create a bigger ebike battery. To accomplish this, I will use a XT60 Parallel Battery Connector Cable Extension Y Splitter.

  • Keteles K-800 Review

1000 watt powerful motor fat tire ebike for adults. That was the chinese description for the first ebike I purchased from Amazon for the amazing price of $99. So cheap, I bought 3.

Well, that bike never arrived, but I ended up liking that description so much I found a way to buy it in the form of a Keteles K-800. This ebike goes by many different sticker names, like Philodo or Qikaitu, and it is a basic ebike with bafang hub motor, 48 volt hailong battery, and huge tires.

I’m pretty happy with my Keteles K-800. The motor is powerful. nothing has broken after a few hundred miles riding, and the price was good.

First Ride, Testing Hills & Range

My first ride on the K-800 was in western Washington winter on extemely hilly streets. First, it got me up a super steep hill at about 7kmh, slower than a car but not much because this hill is super duper steep.

The rest of the ride was through more hills and I took it onto a closed golf course. It felt solid and fast at every moment. I was able to explore some roads I would never want to on a normal bike because of the hills and having to turn around and possibly go back up a hill.

The bike came with a 13 amp hour battery and after 16 km of lots of hills it was out of juice. The bike is definitely heavy to heavy when you don’t have battery, but I’m used to it and can peddle easily after only a few weeks of use.

    The Pedal Assist Is Bad

The K-800 has pedal assist or a handle bar throttle. The pedal assist is pretty worthless and I decided to disable it, which is easy.

The assist would sometimes turn on when I wanted to be stopped. I felt that I would pedal and when I got going faster than the assist level, it would turn off and it was a weird, unatural feeling I did not like.

The bike works much better with only the throttle. I like having the control of when the motor kicks on so I can ride like a motorcycle, or give myself a boost while pedalling.

    Breaks Squeek

I never had a bike with disk brakes before and I didn’t even want to try to figure them out so I took the bike to local mechanic. But they still made noise, and I took the bike back to have the mechanic try again. They still made noise but I was too tired of going to the mechanic and just lived with squeeky brakes.

I have looked at some disk brakes now and I should try and adjust them myself to see if they are bad or not. Maybe I will do it today but it’s super hot and I don’t know.

The brakes seem strong enough though and should last a decent amount of time. I can edit this to see how long they last.

    Comfy Ride, Imposing Appearance

The fat tires and suspension make for one of the most comfortable rides I’ve experienced. It feels like I am riding on a big old sofa most of the time, I feel high up and visible.

The seat is big and comfy too. I’m 194 cm tall and it is probably a little small for me. But it looks huge and every small person I have heard from said it looked to big for them but I think the tires make it seem bigger than it is.

Yes, I think the Keteles K800 looks huge to everyone on the street, and the blue walled wheels add flashiness. I feel like a viking among paceños gliding to concur Coromuel riding this ebike.

    First Ride In La Paz

I got my battery after about two or three or more months of failure while having a no juice ebike. So I was pretty excited to go Maleconeando but on the way I ran into a hanging fiber-optic cable and almost hung myself.

The cable was at the perfect height to wrap around my neck and it pulled me off of the bike and I was suspended like that for a second. I was in tremendous pain and I rode home slowly.

I had a red scar for a week but I was ok after a few days of pain. All this to say ebikes are super dangerous.

    Bigger Battery Is Better

I started with the 13 ah battery but I really believe the bigger the better and now I’m at a 23ah, which does well. I’m very careful with my batteries because I want it to last as long as possible. I try to keep it’s charge state between 20% and 80%.

With the bigger battery, I can go about three days of running errands before I need to recharge. I made it as far as Coromuel and back to centro without using the pedals much before the battery ran out, but it got below my target of 20% to never go below.

I think the 13 ah could be ok if you can charge your battery each day. Like just riding across town 20km or less it would be good.

  • Trip Report: Ebikeing From La Paz To Playa El Saltito

Trip Report: Ebikeing From La Paz To Playa El Saltito

I bought my ebike with one goal in mind: being able to ride to my favorite beach, el Saltito. After about five months of ownership and thinking about trying it out, I finally got to it.

My Keteles K8 took me to the beach and back to my home without completely draining the battery. Unfortunately, it took me longer, and I was more tired afterward than I had hoped.

Looking back, I didn’t give this first attempt my best effort, and there are things I can do to make it more successful. Keep reading to hear how it went and how I will improve it next time.

    Why Playa El Saltito?

El Saltito is about a half hour from centro La Paz, but you have to get there by a pretty knarly sand road. My little honda makes it there, and plenty of other little pos’s do, but it doesn’t like it and I always feel like I’m going to break my car when returning.

I love this beach because it has deep water for swimming, an island and sea rock to look at, extensive coral, and an awesome choose your height cliff jump! It gets surprisingly crowded for the rustic road, but it’s a fantastic beach and super close to the city.

Also, the paved part of the road to get there is one of the best in the world. With stunning views, and impeccable condition, until it abruptly ends and turns into soft, steep sand two KM from the beach.

Can You Ride An Ebike To Playa El Saltito?

Yes! It’s an amazing ebike ride, but the hills are pretty huge and you need to help your ebike to not overheat or use all it’s juice.

I have a 20 amp-hour battery, and I used most of my capacity with a lot of pedalling that made me tired when I got home. For future rides, I’m going to find the best route to make the playa more accessible.

    Which Route Did I Choose?

This ride started on a whim, I wasn’t sure I wanted to make it to El Saltito becuase I left late in the day, around three in the afternoon. It was super hot(duh), so I went on the carretera escenaria so I could have a swim before tackling the big hills.

Also, I stopped at the repsol and bought a six-pack of beer, because I thought I was just going to a close by beach to chill. Well, you know, I swam off the ciclovia, and then decided I should just go to Saltito, por que no?

Oh yeah, I didn’t have too much water either. So I rode up the steep hill by the stupid golf course, then up the hill of the trucker highway and turned past the Mordor electrical generation plant on the beautiful highway to the beaches. On the way back I went through the sandy road neighborhoods and around to 5 de Mayo, which is certainly nicer becuase there is no traffic.

    How Was The Ride There?

Except for the advantage of being able to swim at the start of the route, it’s not so good. You have to go over the big hill by the golf course, and then the big hill with semi-remolques from the ferry, not too fun.

The highlight of this section was finding an oxxo floppy cooler on the side of the road! Total score, it was in good shape. Once off that highway it is pretty nice because there is no traffic and it’s beautiful.

There are lots of side roads I want to explore. You have to ride two more big, paved hills but they are awesome looking and not too difficult, especially with help from the motor but you have to pedal or it could overheat I imagine and you need to save battery for the way back.

    The Sandy Section

Wuuujuuuu this was super fun riding down! You go super fast and the K8, with beefy tires and suspension makes it comfy. My brakes were good enough and the road is wide.

Coming back up wasn’t bad at all. I let a Toyota Tacoma type awesome beach adventure truck pass me, but they ended up taking it super easy and I had to slow down not to pass them. I felt pretty cool about that.

I made it to the pavement again without a problem, but I think somewhere near the top it overheated and shut down, but I was able to continue pedalling and restart the system after a few minutes to get the power back.

    Returning In The Night

This trip started too late and I rode home in the dark. Yes, it’s probably dangerous because for sure people drive home from the beach drunk.

But I was pretty comfy with the nice lights on the K8 and it was not too hot! After the highway to the playas I went through the sandy roads through some of the most rustic neighborhoods of the city.

It was pretty damn dark for a long while with one or two ranchos and a straight rode that I was doing 30 km on, feeling tired and ready to be home and drink water. Soon enough I came to the lights of the city and I only worried a little that my battery was running low.

  • Ebike Review: Honey Whale Bicicleta Electrica De Montaña Bk08

Ebike Review: Honey Whale Bicicleta Electrica De Montaña Bk08

This ebike is a common Chinese ebike, generically called a K8 that you can find with many different brand names. In Mexico, it’s sold with a Honey Whale logo on it.

This is the first ebike I ever bought, but with a Keteles branding. The Honey Whale version is bad because it features dual motors. I liked my Keteles version because it only has a rear motor.

What is Wrong With A Dual Motor Ebike?

There is nothing wrong with a dual motor ebike, I just thought it was fricking stupid. I say this purely from my limited understanding of physics and the Roman empire, but here I can explain it to you:

    • First, each motor is 1000 watts, and that is wicked powerful, one is more than enough to get me going a little too fast for comfort with the dinky helmet and no need for a motor vehicle license the bike comes with.
    • Therefore, the Honey Whale Bk08 comes with a super heavy, totally uneccessary motor on the front wheel. The bike and battery is already super heavy. No thanks.
    • So, basically, your battery won’t last as long, your tires and everything else will wear faster, your not going to get as much exercise becuase it’s way too heavy to pedal funly, and, yeah it’s just a stupid idea. I can’t imagine wanting two 1000 watt motors.

No, I didn’t even try the dual motor version of this bike, it’s fricken dumb as heck. I got it because it was the fastest way to get a battery. You can read about my problems shipping ebike batteries here.

    Buy The K8 Instead

Ok, I’m done complaining about the stupidity of the Bk08, becuase I actually really love my Keteles K8, which is the same as the Bk08, just with the correct number of motors.

I beg the Honey Whale company to please stop offering the stupid Bk08, offer one with only one motor. It’s so much better in every way.

Luckily, now they offer the K8 with a single motor here in Mexico on Mercado Libre. It has an Amyet. Follow this link and you can get the awesome ebike for an excellent price of $13.499 pesos!!! Great Ebike For Sale

If you are in La Paz and want to try out the K8 before buying, contact me at beesonmr@gmail.com or whatsapp +52 612 232 9128 or USA phone 2064928130. Thanks!
